It’s funny to me how I take my ability to use technology for granted. I have worked with older people in the past that didn’t know how to use a computer, and sending e-mail with an attachment was a major accomplishment for them. I never though badly about these people, since I knew that they didn’t grow up using computers like I did. I guess I never realized that my parents didn’t either. Seeing as I’ve been using a computer since the age of 8, I never really thought about how infused into my lifestyle this technology is.
Last night over dinner, my dad asked if using mapquest was free, and if so, if we could map the directions to his conference. I laughed and said that if he had to ask, he’s never used it before, huh? And he said “yep, that’s why I said we, you didn’t think I had a mouse in my pocket, did you?”
So we finished dinner and I sat him down and showed him how to use mapquest. And as he hunted and pecked each character of the address, I smiled and thought about how he taught me to ride a bike, and now I was teaching him how to use the internet.
